Mandhiya

It is customary to drink Mandiya or Madhi Pej, in all the areas of Bastar during summer, or rather it is included in the food and drink here. In which Madhi Pej will be found made in the kitchen of almost all the houses these days. Madhi  (popularly known in English as Ragi) is widely cultivated in parts of Bastar region, and is being consumed for ages in this area. Madhiya has many benefits like it works to cool the stomach in summer days. There are different methods of making it. In general Mandiya Pej is prepared by mixing Madhi and Rice in a specific ratio of (1/4 Kg Madhi with one small cup of Rice), this mixture is then grinded to flour. This flour is left for soaking in water   overnight which give little bit of soreness to the mixture. Plenty of boiling water is added to this mixture with a small amount of rice in it. When it is cooked and ready, it is drunk with onion, salt, green chilli or any type of chutney. By the way, in Dantewada, Pej is eaten with mandbanga chutney i.e. Tomato chutney or raw Turmeric chutney or Shellac chutney. You can also drink this madhi page with pickle.
