Karil or Baasta is found in abundance in the weekly haat markets of south Bastar during the monsoon season. It is also a source of income for the people here. The local residents here call this vegetable "Baasta" in the most spoken dialect of Halbi, which is the small bamboo plants. These small plants of bamboo are very soft and tender, and are cut and brought by the villagers to make vegetables and sell them in the weekly haats. Which is very much liked by the people here. It is sold in a pinch as soon as it comes in the market. It would not be wrong to say that Basta is one of the favourite food here. There are many ways of cooking Baasta. It is very tasty when eaten dry. We get these cutlets in Bastar market. They are not easy to cook, they have to be boiled in a lot of water first, due to which their crispness ends, and becomes a little softer. Now adding onion, garlic, ginger and other spices will make Baasta bit spicy. But in the interior areas of Dantewada, it is made in a very simple way, in which only light oil, dry red chili, mustard and turmeric are used. If it is cooked on the stove, with low flame it tastes much better.
